Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Sir Thomas is coughing again in the damp.
He is scraping mud off his boots with a twig.
We aren’t looking for dragons this morning.
We are looking for a dry place to sleep.
The sun is just a gray smudge in the sky.
His chainmail is starting to rust at the seams.
He says my name like it’s a heavy stone.
I just hand him the water skin.
[Chorus]
It isn’t much like the songs they sing.
It is mostly just hunger and heavy iron.
We walk until the road runs out.
Then we walk some more.
[Verse 2]
There is a deep notch in his old sword.
It came from a boy no older than me.
That boy didn’t even have a proper shield.
Just a pitchfork and a look of sudden surprise.
Thomas doesn't talk about that afternoon.
He just rubs his knees when the fire gets low.
The smoke makes him squint his watery eyes.
He smells like wet wool and sour wine.
[Chorus]
It isn’t much like the songs they sing.
It is mostly just hunger and heavy iron.
We walk until the road runs out.
Then we walk some more.
[Verse 3]
The village we saved is a pile of ash.
The peasants didn't have any gold to give.
They gave us a bucket of curdled milk.
And a three-legged goat that follows the cart.
I am polishing a helmet that is dented.
It looks more like a crushed tin cup now.
Glory is a word for people in clean shirts.
We are just two men with sore feet.
[Chorus]
It isn’t much like the songs they sing.
It is mostly just hunger and heavy iron.
We walk until the road runs out.
Then we walk some more.
[Outro]
Keep moving, he says.
The mud is deep.
The iron is heavy.
Don't look back.
