The Wanderer’s Grand Farewell
Rock opera in several movements: it opens as a hushed piano ballad with a lone male voice, bursts into a playful operatic section with stacked choir harmonies, then explodes into a hard rock guitar riff before closing softly on piano. Theatrical, dramatic and grand, with lyrics about a wanderer torn between staying and leaving home.
Lyrics
The kettle whistles to the wall. The boots are laced beside the door.I know the dust of every hall,And yet I’m craving something more.My mother’s hands are stained with flour. The garden gate is swinging wide.I’ve counted every passing hour,With nowhere left for me to hide. One foot is pressed against the stone,The other feels the open air.I’m terrified to be alone,But suffocated staying here.To go or stay?To fly or fall?[Soprano descant] The road is singing! The roots are clinging!Should I answer to the call?To go or stay?To lose it all?[Choir] Heavens open![Choir] Spirit broken!Wanderer behind the wall. The maps are spread across the bed.The ink is dry, the lines are bold.I hear the words my father said,About the glint of mountain gold. But then the smell of morning bread,And every story ever told,They pull the spirit from my head,And wrap me in the familiar cold.To go or stay?To fly or fall?[Soprano descant] The road is singing! The roots are clinging!Should I answer to the call?To go or stay?To lose it all?[Choir] Heavens open![Choir] Spirit broken!Wanderer behind the wall.I am the anchor, I am the sail!I am the hammer, I am the nail!Cut the cord or mend the fence,Nothing makes a lick of sense![Guitar solo]I’m leaving! I’m staying! The price that I’m paying! To go or stay?To fly or fall? The road is singing! The roots are clinging!Should I answer to the call?To go or stay?To lose it all?Heavens open!Spirit broken!Wanderer behind the wall. The boots are laced beside the door.I know the dust of every hall. And yet I’m craving something more.Just one more step. That’s all.
